Historic Savannah Theatre

222 Bull St., Savannah, Georgia

One of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the US, the Historic Savannah Theatre today is a buzzing performing arts venue with a schedule full of live theater, music performances, and special holiday shows. With a convenient location on Chippewa Square in the heart of the Savannah Historic District, this theater is a destination for visitors looking to discover the city’s thriving arts and culture scene.

Book tickets to an event at the Historic Savannah Theatre to combine art with history and entertainment with sightseeing. This landmark dates back to 1818 and has seen luminaries, including historical figures like Oscar Wilde, take the stage. The theater is a popular stop on walking tours of Savannah, including nighttime ghost tours, scavenger hunts, and sightseeing tours, but the best way to experience the venue is by attending a show. Book ahead for the best tickets.

  • Tickets are available online or by calling the box office; discounts are available for youth under 17, and active military can access free tickets.

  • This theater offers a small concession stand with snacks and drinks, including alcoholic beverages, but not full meals.

  • Restrooms are available but expect long lines at times as facilities are limited.

  • Some shows are family-friendly and provide an excellent option for entertainment for families with kids.

This theater is located on Chippewa Square in the heart of the dreamy Savannah Historic District. Stroll beneath moss-draped trees to reach the Art Deco-façade of this theater. The location is well served by public transportation, including bus stops at Whitaker and Hull, Liberty and Whitaker, and Oglethorpe and Bull. Most visitors arrive on foot or via public transit, but some street parking is also available, or additional parking can be found at the Liberty Parking Deck.

Weather dictates the best time of year to visit Savannah, with spring and fall being the most popular seasons. Expect pleasant temperatures at these times of year compared to the hot and humid summer months. Winter months are often mild for visitors wanting to explore during the holiday season and beyond.

Many people attempt to combine a visit to the Historic Savannah Theatre with a stop at the famous bench from the film Forrest Gump. But while Chippewa Square was the location for these famous scenes, the bench is no longer in the square. Check out this landmark to see the film’s backdrop, but don’t expect to see the bench where you might expect to find it.
