POINT OF INTEREST

Historic Rosedale Plantation

3427 N Tryon St., Charlotte, North Carolina

Discover a piece of North Carolina's exquisite federal-style architecture at the Historic Rosedale Plantation, built by a renowned architect, Archibald Frew, in 1815. Experience the restored house, vast grounds, and flourishing gardens up close and be immersed in the life of an antebellum plantation, including the lives of the enslaved people there. Don't miss this remarkable masterpiece, just a stone's throw from uptown Charlotte.

Experience plantation life on a docent-led tour of the 15-room home furnished with authentic period pieces. You’ll see original wallpaper and woodwork in the parlors, which have been preserved to retain their former glory. You can then explore the plantation's gardens and historic trees at your leisure, as well as the Historic Rosedale Foundation, dedicated to educating visitors about plantation life, preserving history and architecture, and building a more diverse and inclusive space for interpretation. Join on a journey through time and discover the charm and elegance of the past.

  • Historic house tours are available with advanced online bookings and include admission to the grounds.

  • There’s also the option to purchase entrance to the grounds and gardens for $5, which doesn’t include the house.

  • Guided house tours are available Wednesday–Friday and select Saturdays at 11:30am and 1:00pm.

  • The estate can be used for weddings and special events on occasion, so check the website for the latest events.

  • There’s plenty of parking on site for those driving to the property from Charlotte.

Charlotte’s city center is just 3 miles south of the property. There are plenty of transport options from the city: the most efficient is driving yourself or taking a taxi from the airport or downtown. For public transport options, the local bus network services the neighborhood. Take bus 11, which runs along N Tryon Street and has a stop just outside the entrance.

The best seasons for visiting Charlotte are fall and spring. These months, March until May and September to November, are considered shoulder seasons on either side of the busy and warmer summer. This offers more moderate temperatures for exploring outdoors, with day temperatures around 65°F (18°F). Plus, the garden flowers bloom in spring, making it a colorful time to visit the property.

While most people prefer to take the house tour to learn about the plantation's history, don’t forget to allow enough time to wander the gardens afterward. For nature lovers, there’s plenty to admire. Stroll through the Big Tree Museum or shrub garden planted by a retired biologist, Dr. Larry Mellichamp. Sit in the formal gardens and observe the birds, butterflies, and wildflowers blooming in spring.
