Highland Village Museum is at 4119 Hwy. 223. This 16-hectare (40-acre) living-history center depicts Nova Scotia's Scottish Gaelic heritage from the late 18th through early 20th centuries. Gaelic-speaking costumed interpreters present craft and cultural demonstrations including fiddle music and Gaelic song. They also staff 11 buildings, including an 1830s log house and barn, an 1874 church, a 1900s working blacksmith shop, a one-room schoolhouse, and a general store stocked with goods. A visitor center contains an orientation video and the Roots Cape Breton Genealogy and Family History Centre. The museum's hillside location provides a beautiful view of the Bras d'Or Lakes. Rare barnyard animals roam the grounds. Living history programs for children allow them to dress in pioneer clothes and pretend to be a young Gael. Workshops, musical events and holiday programs are presented throughout the year. Note: The tour includes walking up a hill, on stairs and on gravel paths. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
