Heroes’ Square (Heldenplatz)

A highlight of most Vienna sightseeing tours, this colossal plaza is known for its massive size and two monumental equestrian statues of Archduke Charles of Austria and Prince Eugene of Savoy. Originally Heldenplatz was enclosed at its southern flank, but this side now stands open; the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is all that remains of the walls. The square was also the backdrop to one of the most infamous moments of the 20th century: It was here that Hitler announced the Anschluss on March 15, 1938.

• There is very little protection from the elements in the sweeping Heldenplatz, so dress for the weather when visiting.

• The square is flanked by the Burggarten and Volksgarten parks, ideal for a break from sightseeing.

• Museum lovers will spend much of their time in Vienna crisscrossing Heldenplatz to visit the collections housed in the palaces around the square.

• The level, paved square is easy to navigate with a wheelchair or stroller.

With its imposing size and central location, it’s hard to miss Heldenplatz. You can easily walk to the square from most of Vienna’s top attractions, and it is also a stop on hop-on, hop-off bus routes and walking and cycling tours. Four metro stations are located in the vicinity, including Herrengasse on the U3 line, Stephansplatz on the U1 and U3 lines, Volkstheater on the U2 and U3 lines, and Museumsquartier on the U2 line.

The square is accessible 24 hours a day, though it is at its most lively during midday, when the surrounding sights and museums are open. Heldenplatz is one of Vienna’s most popular venues for both concerts and public demonstrations, offering a glimpse of the city’s cultural and political life. One of the most famous annual events held here is the Festival of Joy on May 8th, which celebrates the end of Nazi occupation with a massive free concert.

Heldenplatz is lined on one side by the Hofburg Palace, the seat of the Habsburg dynasty from the 13th century until 1918. Today the palace houses several sublime Imperial collections in the Neue Burg, plus the Sisi Museum, the Imperial Apartments, the office of the Austrian president, the National Library, the Hofburgs’ private chapel, and the Augustinian Church, which was long the parish church of Vienna’s aristocracy.
