Hartley Nature Center

3001 Woodland Ave, Duluth, MN, 55803

In Duluth’s Hartley Park, this peaceful retreat above the city offers interactive exhibits, a natural play area, opportunities for bird-watching, and miles of hiking trails. The center focuses on environmental education, sustainability, and connecting visitors with nature, making it a perfect spot for outdoor enthusiasts and families.

The basics

Hartley Nature Center anchors Hartley Park, one of the largest green spaces in the city of Duluth. With 10 miles (16 kilometers) of multi-use trails, it’s a magnet for hikers, mountain bikers, cross-country skiers, and birders, along with anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors. The nature center offers great programming for kids, as well as classes, workshops, events, and gear rentals aimed at adults, too—everything from fat-tire bikes to winter snow boots.

Things to know before you go

  • The Hartley Nature Center’s outdoor campus, a portion of the reserve, is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from morning to late afternoon.

  • All rentals are first-come, first-serve, and are only available during business hours.

  • Current trail conditions can be found on the center’s website.

How to get there

To reach the Hartley Nature Center, hop on I-35. Take the 21st Avenue East exit and head north, turning onto Woodland Avenue. Follow the signs to the Hartley Park entrance, and the nature center is a few more seconds from there. Ample parking is available, and the center is easily accessible by car, bike, or local bus routes.

When to get there

The Hartley Nature Center is open year-round. Spring and summer offer lush trails and vibrant wildlife, while in the autumn you’ll see fabulous fall color. Winter transforms the park into a snowy wonderland, perfect for cross-country skiing. The nature center itself is typically open to the public Monday-Saturday, from morning to late afternoon.

Exploring Duluth’s outdoors

Right on the shores of Lake Superior, Duluth’s green spaces have a lot to offer. Beyond Hartley Park and the nature center, check out Enger Park, high above the city with great aerial views; Congdon Park and its waterfall; and Leif Erickson Park, right on the lake. Or see it all at the same time—with a helicopter tour.
