POINT OF INTEREST

Harry S. Truman Little White House

111 Front St., Naval Air Station, Key West, Florida

American President Harry S. Truman used this 1890 landmark as a winter White House, visiting 11 times over the course of his presidency. Now a presidential museum, the house preserves Truman’s legacy with original furnishings, personal items, and memorabilia. Guided tours of the museum uncover personal stories from Truman’s time here.

Surrounded by gardens and a gracious porch, this Key West home has seen its fair share of political action, from peace talks to presidential visits. Tours of the museum are included with admission tickets, which can be purchased in advance. It’s also an included stop on some Key West tours, from shorter history-themed walking tours to full-day hop-on, hop-off tours of the city. If you’re just interested in seeing the gardens, they’re free to access.

  • Political-themed gifts are available at the gift shop. (No admission is required to visit.)
  • This is a fun stop for anyone interested in politics. A total of six American Presidents have used the property.
  • Only the main floor of the museum is wheelchair accessible, but a video of the second floor is available upon request.

The Harry S. Truman Little White House is located at 111 Front Street in Key West. A nearby bus stop is located at the corner of Eaton Street and Whitehead Street, with service from the Duval Loop, the Green Line, and the Lower Keys Shuttle (LKS). Street parking in this area is very limited, but paid parking is available at the 201 Front Street Garage, about 500 feet (152 meters) away.

Open all year, the museum offers tours every 20 minutes throughout the day. Since diplomatic events are still occasionally held here, the museum is sometimes closed without advance notice. If you’re planning a special trip, it’s a good idea to call in advance.

A short distance from the museum is The Oldest House, an 1829 residence claiming the title of South Florida’s oldest home. Another favorite is the 1851 Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, whose breezy porch and elegant windows showcase Key West architecture at its finest. Lush gardens surround the Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, where well-preserved furnishings evoke the feel of a wealthy 19th-century Key West residence.
