Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park

After escaping slavery herself, abolitionist Harriet Tubman led dozens of enslaved people to freedom as a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad. Tubman's namesake park commemorates her legacy with a preserved landscape of marshlands, fields, and Chesapeake Bay-adjacent waterways that have remained unchanged since the 19th century.
The park is located near the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, with preserved wetlands and farmlands situated in a remote corner of Maryland’s Eastern Shore between Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The area is Harriet Tubman’s birthplace and a key location along the Underground Railroad, which was used by enslaved African Americans to escape into free American states and Canada.
A visitor center with educational exhibits offers information about driving the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Scenic Byway, an 125-mile (200 kilometers) route with dozens of historic Harriet Tubman-related locations. A downloadable app with audio narration allows visitors to follow a self-guided tour in their own vehicle.
The on-site visitor center is equipped with public restrooms, a gift shop, a research library, and an informational short film and exhibit.
The gift shop sells books and related memorabilia, and offers a commemorative stamp for National Park Passports.
The park, legacy garden, and visitor center are free to visit.
The grounds and buildings are fully wheelchair-accessible, with handicapped parking available. Service animals are welcome in park areas and wheelchairs are available on request.
The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park visitor center is located at 4068 Golden Hill Road in Church Creek Maryland, just outside of Cambridge. If coming by car, take US 50 and turn right on Route 16; follow road signs to Church Creek, then turn onto Route 335. You’ll see the visitor center on your right.
The visitor center keeps standard business hours from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Sunday (it’s closed on Mondays). The center is closed during Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and most federal holidays. It keeps regular opening hours on Juneteenth, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving.
This 125-mile (200 kilometers) scenic byway offers a self-guided driving tour along 45 designated locations related to Harriet Tubman’s early life and work on the Underground Railroad, including a general store, a plantation farm, and others. The sites span locations from Maryland to Delaware, and can be visited independently or on guided tours. Either way, visitors can explore the byway in as little as a few hours or as long as a few days.
