POINT OF INTEREST

Hampden Estate

Wakefield, Jamaica

Established in the 1750s, Hampden Estate is a working rum distillery in Trelawny on the northwest side of Jamaica. Here, you can stroll around the scenic estate grounds and learn how the popular spirit is produced during visits to the fermentation room and copper stills. And of course, you’ll get the chance to sample different rums.

At Hampden Estate, you can explore the grounds surrounding the Great House, sample rums, and see how sugarcane is turned into liquor. It’s one of the last distilleries that uses discontinuous distillation to produce its rums, which means that each batch of rum starts from scratch. Guided estate tours from Falmouth, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Negril often include an authentic Jamaican lunch served with festivals (deep-fried bread) and bammy (a traditional Jamaican cassava flatbread).

  • The tour of the distillery lasts for about two hours.

  • The tour is not wheelchair-accessible, but the welcome center is.

  • Visitors must be 18 years of age or older to take the tour.

  • Closed-toe shoes are required since it’s a working distillery.

Less than 30 minutes away by car from Jamaica's port in Falmouth, Hampden Estate is a popular option for cruise ship passengers. Most guided tours from Falmouth, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Negril provide round-trip transport from local hotels or the port. If you’re planning to explore on your own, renting a car is the best way to get around Jamaica, but buses and taxis are also available.

Hampden Estate offers tours Monday through Friday at 10am and 11am. It’s closed on weekends and public holidays. In June, the Jamaica Rum Festival features rum tastings, food stalls, music, and entertainment. Overall, the best time to visit Jamaica is during the dry season, from mid-December through April. Hurricane season runs from the start of June through the end of November, with peak time between mid-August and mid-October.

If you’re interested in exploring more rum production in Jamaica, you’re in luck. In addition to Hampden Estate, you can head to Appleton Estate to learn about the brand’s “Cane to Cocktail” rum-making process. Other options include Worthy Park Estate, less than an hour away from Kingston and Ocho Rios, and Long Pond Distillery, located in the same parish as Hampden.
