POINT OF INTEREST

Hamilton

Hamilton, BMU

Dubbed simply “town” by Bermudians, Hamilton is the islands’ capital and urban hub. It’s home to shops, banking centers, and nightlife, and it’s where glamor and quaintness mix—the gleaming white yachts of Hamilton Harbour provide a stark contrast to the toy-town, pastel buildings of Front Street. For those seeking Bermuda’s eccentric side, Hamilton is where it’s at.

Hamilton sits on the east side of Bermuda’s Great Sound. Most things happen on Front Street (or the next few blocks inland from it), where you’ll find shops, restaurants, the tourist information office, and the ferry terminal. Hamilton is easy to explore independently, but food tours and shopping trips help you check off must-try Bermudian dishes and find hidden gems. Many Bermuda island tours and day trips also depart from Hamilton, making it a great base for those who want to explore further.

  • Bermuda isn’t generally considered a wheelchair-accessible destination, but Hamilton has more wheelchair-friendly sidewalks and a few taxi companies that offer accessible transport.

  • There is free Wi-Fi access in Hamilton.

  • There are several public restrooms in Hamilton, which have a reputation for being clean.

From the Royal Naval Dockyard, where most cruise ships dock, the quickest route to Hamilton is across the Great Sound via the 20-minute Blue Route ferry. From L.F. Wade International Airport, a taxi is a good choice for those with luggage; but if you’re traveling light you can take any of the buses that reach Hamilton in 35-50 minutes. Note that luggage on the buses is not officially allowed.

High summer is when things are the most fun in Hamilton. Bermuda Day on May 24 kicks into action with a parade, music, and dancing on the streets, while Bermuda Carnival in mid-June sees Hamilton-focused revelry over several days. From April through early September, there are weekly Harbour Nights on Wednesday evenings when Front Street becomes a pedestrian block party complete with outdoor dining, food trucks, stalls by local artists, and live Gombey music.

If you want to sightsee in Hamilton itself, put Bermuda Cathedral at the top of your list. Known officially as the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, this place of worship is worth a look for its neo-Gothic architecture and tower views. Make a small donation when you enter, and you can climb 155 steps up the church tower for views that sweep over the city and sea.
