Halles de Dijon

Halles de Dijon, Dijon, FRA

The Halles de Dijon, the indoor halls of the Dijon Market, might be the prettiest place you’ve ever done your weekly grocery shop. The building was constructed in the late 19th century and incorporates classically-influenced design features. Look up to see decorative animal and mythological motifs while picking out the freshest local cheese.

The Halles de Dijon provides a good incentive to get up early on market days and go looking for fresh food. Most visitors to Dijon head to the market independently, but as it’s centrally located, many guided tours of the city pass by, en route to the Ducal Palace or Liberation Square.

  • The market sells many convenient items for a self-made picnic, including cheese, cold meats, fruit, and bread.
  • The prices at the market aren’t the cheapest, but the quality tends to be very high.
  • Watch your feet as you walk around as many locals carry wheeled bags for their purchases, which are easy to trip over.

The market is right in the center of Dijon, just north of the Ducal Palace and Liberation Square. There are several bus and tram stops within a few blocks of the market. Even if you’re self-driving, leave the car at the hotel and walk or get public transport—parking can be tricky in Dijon’s Old Town area.

The Halles de Dijon is open on Tuesdays, Thursday, Fridays, and Saturday, from early morning until around 1pm. The indoor area is part of the larger Dijon Market that extends outside, but on Thursdays the market is indoors only. Fridays and Saturdays tend to be busiest, while some vendors are closed on other days.

Dijon, and the wider Burgundy region of France, is justifiably famous for its food and wine. As well as the Halles de Dijon, foodie travelers can enjoy other culinary experiences in the region. Tour Burgundy’s wineries, take a wine and cheese-pairing masterclass, and jump at every opportunity to sample local specialties, such as boeuf bourguignon, coq au vin, and crème de cassis.
