Hallasan National Park

Seogwipo, South Korea

Hallasan National Park is a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve in Seogwipo on Jeju Island. The park is centered around Hallasan—a dormant volcano and South Korea's highest peak. Visitors can explore diverse ecosystems, including lush hiking trails, volcanic craters, and serene mountain lakes.

You must reserve your visit to Hallasan National Park in advance via the park’s official website. Booking is available for 2-month blocks beginning on the first of every other month. While the park offers seven trails, you must choose between the Seongpanak Trail or Gwaneumsa Trail when booking. The two routes start in different locations, and both end at the Hallasan summit.

Explore the park independently or as part of a guided tour. Excursions often include guides who provide insights into the park's geological features, shorter hikes, plus round-trip transportation from your hotel. Day tours often include additional visits to surrounding attractions such as Yakcheonsa Temple, Cheonjiyeon Waterfall, and Jusangjeolli Cliff.

  • Dress in layers and wear sturdy hiking shoes for comfort and safety on the trails.

  • Carry plenty of water and snacks, as amenities within the park are limited.

  • Research the trails before your visit and choose the one that suits your fitness level and time constraints.

  • Respect the natural environment and adhere to designated trails to minimize ecological impact.

Hallasan National Park is accessible from Jeju City by public transportation, taxi, or car. To get to the Gwaneumsa Trail from Jeju by public transit, take bus 281 from Jeju to Seogwipo and then bus 475 to the trail entrance. For the Seongpanak Trail, take bus 281 or 181 to Seogwipo and then walk to the trail entrance. Alternatively, organized tours with round-trip transportation eliminate the hassle of navigating the area independently.

The best time to visit Hallasan National Park is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is mild and the foliage displays vibrant colors. If possible, avoid the peak summer season (June to August), as temperatures can be hot and humid, especially on the hiking trails. Weekdays are usually less crowded than weekends, offering a more tranquil experience.

Hikers who explore Hallasan National Park in Jeju Island will find another marvel awaiting them at Manjanggul Cave. This striking subterranean wonder contrasts the lush landscapes above with a labyrinth of lava tubes and stunning rock formations. The centrally located cave is a cool escape from the heat and a deeper exploration of Jeju's geological story.
