Hackescher Markt

Berlin, DEU

Whether it's daytime or nighttime, at Hackescher Markt the energy never wanes. During the day, it's a prime location for shopping; think trendy boutiques, artists' studios, and one-of-a-kind souvenirs. It’s also awash with great restaurants, cafés, and regular farmers’ markets. For night owls, there’s an abundance of bars, clubs, and musical venues to discover nearby.

Given its central location in Mitte and its wealth of culture, Hackescher Markt is often showcased on sightseeing tours. To slow down and see local attractions up close, opt for a half-day walking tour. Alternatively, visit the area during a sightseeing taxi tour; these routes typically begin at Hackescher Markt, continue to World War II sites such as Bebelplatz, Brandenburg Gate, and the Memorial of the Berlin Wall, and end at the French Cathedral.

  • The Hackescher Markt is wheelchair-accessible, but it's a good idea to check specific establishments before visiting—especially if it’s a historical building, as it may not be fully wheelchair-accessible.

  • Hackescher Markt hosts a weekly market on Thursdays and Saturdays.

  • For trendy fashion brands and artist studios, check out Schönhauser Strasse and Münzstraße.

  • For nightlife spots, Oranienburger Strasse, close to the S-Bahn Station, and the backyard bars of the Hackesche Höfe are great choices.

Located in Mitte and super easy to get to, Hackescher Markt has its own S-Bahn station—Hackescher Markt, which is served by the S5, S7, or S75 S-Bahn lines. As the parking in the center is quite expensive, it’s best to get public transport or walk; it takes around 12 minutes from Alexanderplatz. If you’re interested in visiting the Hackesche Höfe courtyards, you can get to these through the arched entrance on Rosenthaler Strasse 40.

Hackescher Markt is a vibrant hub with year-round activity. However, if you prefer a more peaceful shopping experience, it's wise to explore the area on weekdays during the morning hours, when crowds are thinner. If you’re keen to browse market stalls, Thursdays and Saturdays are the prime days to visit. Arriving early on these days ensures you get first dibs on the unique and limited items that tend to sell out quickly.

There’s no shortage of great places to eat and drink near Hackescher Markt; BBQ Kitchen serves hearty BBQ dishes, Aposto offers Italian cuisine, and Yosoy Tapas Berlin is a great spot for light-sharing tapas bites. As for café culture, Cafe Neundrei offers vegan cakes and smoothie bowls, and The Barn is known for its specialty coffee.
