Gyeongju National Museum

186 Iljeong-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do

Just a stone’s throw away from mysterious royal tombs, a world-famous observatory, and a lotus-filled palace complex, the Gyeongju National Museum is the perfect starting point for any Gyeongju visit. Its treasure trove of artifacts brings thousands of years of Korean history to life and adds illuminating context to a city visit.

The museum’s meticulously designed exhibition halls present glimmering artifacts such as a 5th-century golden crown, providing insights into the decedent Silla Dynasty. Simple relics, like ceramics, offer a glimpse into the everyday life of the kingdom's non-royal people. For a more dynamic Gyeongju experience, consider taking a private or group tour. These excursions typically include a thorough overview of the city’s UNESCO-listed sites, including the Daereungwon Tomb Complex and Donggung Palace.

  • The Gyeongju National Museum is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy the museum experience.

  • The on-site Children’s Museum offers hands-on exhibits designed for younger guests.

  • You can download a Gyeongju National Museum exhibition guide onto your smartphone, which offers insights into the various exhibits.

Getting to Gyeongju National Museum is a breeze thanks to its central location. Many of the city’s public bus lines drop travelers outside the museum at the Gyeongju National Museum bus stop. The site is also accessible by taxi and on foot. Travelers coming from Seoul or Busan can easily reach Gyeongju by bus or, more efficiently, by train. For a completely hassle-free sightseeing experience, opt for a day tour that includes transportation.

The Gyeongju National Museum is generally open daily from 10am, with extended hours on the last Wednesday of every month and Saturdays between March and December. To avoid crowds, consider visiting during weekdays and arriving at opening time. The museum is closed on New Year's Day, Lunar New Year, and Chuseok. Remember that the dates of the latter two holidays vary from year to year.

Overflowing with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Gyeongju offers much to be explored, from the intricate artistry of Bulguksa Temple's pagodas to the granite underground Buddha in the mystical Seokguram Grotto Buddha. Due to their location, these two must-visit attractions can be challenging to visit independently. Fortunately, travelers can visit both sites stress-free with an organized tour. Excursions typically include round-trip transportation, admission fees, and guided commentary for a complete and comfortable sightseeing experience.
