Guyam Island

Guyam Island, Philippines

Off the coast of Siargao in the Philippines, Guyam Island is an uninhabited slice of paradise, with powdery white sands, turquoise water, and a cluster of palm trees in its center. But unlike the surf breaks and swells surrounding Siargao, Guyam’s waters are warm, calm, and ideal for swimming.

The basics

Guyam Island is a great place to snorkel and go free-diving, so bring snorkel equipment or take a tour that includes snorkel stops. Nearly all island-hopping tours departing from Siargao visit Guyam Beach, along with Naked Beach—so-called because no vegetation can survive there and it’s completely bare—and Daku Island, the largest of the three offshore islands, which is home to a palm forest where you can clamber to the top of the trees for sweeping island views.

Things to know before you go

  • There’s an entrance fee for the island, which only amounts to a few US dollars.

  • You won’t find any stores on Guyam Island, so make sure you bring plenty of water and snacks with you.

  • Sunscreen, a sun hat, and a towel are essentials on the island.

How to get there

Unless you charter a private boat, the only way to reach Guyam Island is on an island-hopping tour. It takes around 15 minutes to reach the island by speedboat, and boats typically depart from the dock in General Luna, the main tourist hub of Siargao.

When to get there

Guyam Island is always open, but island-hopping tours tend to visit it mid-morning after the first stops. Try to arrive early if you want to feel like you’ve got the place all to yourself. The best time to visit Siargao is during the dry season from March through October, when there’s less chance of tropical storms.

Where to watch surfers in Siargao

Whether you’re there to surf or bask in the sun, you’ll find Siargao’s beaches are some of the best in the Philippines. To watch professionals ride the swell, head to Cloud 9, one of the country’s most famous surf spots, and wander to the wooden lookout point at the end of the boardwalk.
