POINT OF INTEREST

Gringo Gulch

Calle Zaragoza 373, Centro, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco

Once home to Hollywood superstars Liz Taylor and Richard Burton, Gringo Gulch is now a sleepy Puerto Vallarta neighborhood which spills down the hillside above the Cuale River. Characterized by red-roofed, whitewashed "Vallarta-style" mansions—including Casa Kimberly, Taylor’s one-time villa—Gringo Gulch has some of the best views over downtown Puerto Vallarta, as well as a distinctly colorful past.

Named after the influx of affluent North Americans who started moving there in the 1950s, Gringo Gulch is known for its luxurious architecture and laidback, romantic feel. Highlights include Casa Kimberly, Casa Caracol, and Casa Tabachin, most of which are now boutique hotels and private residences. Wander through Gringo Gulch independently or opt for a walking tour to better understand this historic Puerto Vallarta neighborhood. These tours typically include food tastings and make for a great introduction to both Puerto Vallarta and Mexican cuisine.

  • Gringo Gulch is a must-visit for fans of Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, and architectural grandeur.

  • The Night of the Iguana was filmed in and around Gringo Gulch in Puerto Vallarta.

  • Visitors can reserve rooms at many of the luxury properties in Gringo Gulch.

  • Gringo Gulch may not be fully wheelchair or stroller accessible thanks to narrow and uneven sidewalks, as well as cobblestone streets.

Gringo Gulch is a Puerto Vallarta neighborhood situated a few blocks behind the Plaza de Armas, on the north bank of the Cuale River. As such, it’s easily accessible on foot from downtown Puerto Vallarta. The neighborhood officially begins at the corner of the Zaragoza and Miramar streets.

Gringo Gulch is accessible and pleasant year-round, but, like Puerto Vallarta as a whole, is more comfortable during the comparatively cooler winter months. If you plan on exploring the neighborhood, visit early in the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid the worst of the day’s heat.

Gringo Gulch is just one of many Puerto Vallarta neighborhoods. Just south of Gringo Gulch, you’ll find the Zona Romántica— Puerto Vallarta’s thriving gay district—which is full of bars and galleries. Further north, Fluvial is a growing residential neighborhood, while Marina Vallarta is an upscale resort district, complete with an 18-hole golf course and boardwalk.
