Goynuk Canyon (Göynük Kanyonu)

Whether you’re walking Turkey’s (officially the Republic of Türkiye) long-distance hiking trail, the Lycian Way, or looking for a little light adrenaline, Goynuk Canyon has bags to offer. The zipline course boasts a hanging bridge plus three lines, with speeds of up to 40 mph (65 kph). Or try your hand at canyoneering, with cliff jumps, rope ladders, waterfall slides, and the chance to float (or “body raft”) through parts of the canyon. Especially summer season, it pays to prebook canyoneering and ziplines online.

• There’s a small charge to enter Goynuk Canyon.
• The water can be extremely cold. If you are canyoneering outside summer, bring a wetsuit or book a tour that includes one.
• Goynuk Canyon is a good choice for families with children aged seven and up. The minimum weight for ziplining is 45 pounds (20 kilograms), while kids as young as four can try their hands at canyoneering. Hikers should opt for back carriers, not strollers.
• There are restaurants and bathroom facilities at the entrance to the canyon.
• Goynuk Canyon is not wheelchair accessible.

Goynuk Canyon sits about eight miles (12 kilometers) north of Kemer, about two miles (three kilometers) from Goynuk village. An hourly bus links the village to the canyon, but most travelers opt to book adventure packages that include transfers.

Winter rains and spring floods can cause water levels to rise, making canyoneering unsafe. Late April through to early October are good times to visit, with warm weather and more predictable conditions.

Named for the Lycians, an ancient civilization that dominated the area during classical times, the Lycian Way is a 335-mile (540-kilometer) footpath that runs between the Turkish Riviera towns of Fethiye and Antalya. It takes around a month to hike the entire path, which regularly features on lists of the world’s great walks alongside the Camino de Santiago and the Appalachian Trail.
