POINT OF INTEREST

Good Harbor Beach

99 Thatcher Rd., Gloucester, Massachusetts

One of seven main beaches in the coastal hub of Gloucester, Massachusetts, Good Harbor Beach is also among the loveliest. Known for its powdery white sand and crashing Atlantic waves, it’s a popular place for seaside visits all year round. The nearby Salt Island can be reached via a sand bridge during low tide.

Located just east of Gloucester proper, Good Harbor Beach is one of the best places in the region to soak up the Atlantic scenery and enjoy a range of recreational activities.

During the warm months of the year, visitors are welcome to swim and boogie board, while surfers can hit the waves in the early morning or evening. It’s worth bringing an umbrella, towel, and book, so you can while hours away on the sand. Even outside the summer high season, Good Harbor Beach is an ideal destination for an oceanside stroll or photography session. Local amenities and concessions are available on site.

  • Due to strong waves and rip currents, children and less confident swimmers should take caution. Inflatable swim toys are also prohibited.

  • Note that lifeguards are on duty only between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year, as well as select weekends in May and September.

  • Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, non-resident visitors must prebook parking passes via Blinkay—it’s recommended to do so well in advance.

  • The beach is suitable for wheelchair users, with disabled parking, a wooden footbridge, and a beach wheelchair available for use.

  • Dogs are prohibited on Good Harbor Beach from April 1 until September 30.

  • Restrooms, showers, and a food concession stand are all located on site.

Good Harbor Beach is less than 10 minutes by car from downtown Gloucester. Travel via Bass Avenue and Thatcher Road to its dedicated parking lot. Be aware that non-resident parking reservations must be made in advance during the summer high season. The local green and red bus lines also connect Gloucester with Good Harbor Beach in around 30 minutes.

Good Harbor Beach is open throughout the year—gates to the parking area are open daily from early in the morning until late in the evening. The most popular time to visit is during the Memorial Day to Labor Day summer high season, when lifeguards are on duty and all amenities are open. Note that beach facilities can close with little warning during inclement weather.

Good Harbor Beach is among the most popular of Gloucester’s beaches, but it isn’t the only one worth exploring if visiting the coastal hub. You can head to Wingaersheek Beach, arrive during low tide to stroll its sandbar; the tranquil Half Moon Beach, which is located in historic Stage Fort Park; and Pavilion Beach, where festivities are held for the annual St. Peter’s Fiesta, including the infamous Greasy Pole Challenge.
