Stretching north to south through the historic old town, Gibraltar Main Street is the main shopping district of Gibraltar. Known for its duty-free goods, the street is home to hundreds of shops offering all kinds of goods, along with cafes, restaurants, bars, and historic landmarks, housed in buildings of diverse architectural styles.

Walking is the best way to explore the pedestrianized Gibraltar Main Street and its many shops, which include small locally owned boutiques, brand names, and popular high-street outlets housed in buildings that include Andalucian, Moorish, Portuguese, Genoan, and British styles. Browse for goods ranging from souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, and electronics to alcohol, tobacco, and perfume. Some sightseeing tours include a stop at Gibraltar Main Street along with other Gibraltar highlights, including tours from nearby Costa del Sol and Malaga.

  • Gibraltar Main Street offers the best concentration of duty-free shopping in the territory.

  • British pounds, which are accepted, can be withdrawn from the Barclays Bank ATMs on Main Street. Change will be given in Gibraltar pounds.

  • Shops will accept Euros, but exchange rates may be inconsistent and change will be given in Gibraltar pounds.

How to get there

Gibraltar Main Street stretches from Casemates Square to Southport Gates. It’s within walking distance of the cruise port. Mini buses are also available to take visitors to the town gate. Some sightseeing tours include Gibraltar Main Street and will include transfers from the cruise port or from Costa del Sol or Malaga in Spain.

When to get there

Most shops are generally open between 10am and 9pm on weekdays and between 10am and 3pm on Saturdays. Most shops are closed on Sundays and public holidays, though supermarkets and food stores will usually be open on Sunday as well. The schedule of individual stores may differ and it’s best to check ahead to avoid disappointment.

Several notable landmarks can be found on or near Gibraltar Main Street, including the Gibraltar Museum, which traces the history of Gibraltar. The Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned dates from the 15th century, while the 19th century Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is the Church of England Cathedral. Many government buildings can also be found here, including the Governor’s Residence, Law Courts, and Parliament.
