POINT OF INTEREST

George Eastman Museum

900 East Ave., Rochester, NY

Set on the estate of photography and motion picture pioneer George Eastman, the George Eastman Museum is the world’s oldest photography museum. It's home to several million objects that show the evolution of photography and cinema, and the philanthropist's mansion and surrounding gardens are listed as a National Historic Landmark.

Visitors to the Rochester, N.Y., estate can explore the mansion’s many exhibits on a self-guided tour or learn more about George Eastman’s life, work, and estate on a docent-led tour. Tours of the mansion, gallery, and gardens are offered at specific times daily and included in admission. Alternatively, audio and mobile tours—delivered via your cell phone—let you explore the museum and grounds at your own pace.

Photography workshops, film screenings, talks, live music, and other events are held at the museum. Check the museum calendar for details.

  • The museum is a must-see for photography and cinematography buffs.

  • The museum's cafe and store offer food, drinks, souvenirs, and exhibition-related items.

  • There is Wi-Fi available at the museum cafe.

You can reach the museum by car or bus. If driving, take I-90 to I-490. From I-490, take exit 19 for Culver Road and after about a half-mile (1 kilometer) on Culver Road, turn left onto East Avenue. The museum will be on the right. If traveling by bus, take the Regional Transit Service East Ave routes 57 and 81 or University Avenue route 48.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, from morning to early evening, and on Sunday with slightly abbreviated hours. Mansion, garden, and exhibit tours are offered daily at preset times. Reservations are not required, but check the museum’s online tour schedule in advance to plan your visit. You can also find an event and film screening schedule on the museum’s website.

The George Eastman Museum's Dryden Theater is a historic 500-seat theater with a revolving schedule of historic films. The theater is one of the few venues in the world equipped to exhibit nitrate film. So, in addition to playing more than 300 different films each year, the theater hosts the annual Nitrate Picture Show, a festival dedicated to film conservation.
