POINT OF INTEREST

Frist Art Museum

919 Broadway, Nashville, TN

Once home to Nashville’s original post office, Frist Art Museum maintains the building’s historic charm with marble floors, high ceilings, and cast aluminum doors. The space hosts art exhibitions and interactive workshops, as well as a gift shop and café. It does not, though, have permanent collections, but rather a constant rotation of exhibits—making it a must-visit every time you’re in Nashville.

Instead of housing permanent exhibits, the Frist hosts themed exhibits that rotate throughout the year. Traveling national and international shows featuring classical pieces by Michelangelo and Monet, plus collections of American folk art, modern photography, and even an exhibit on Italian sports car design have moved through the space over the years.

The Martin ArtQuest Gallery includes interactive stations on the upper level for kids and families to try stop-motion animation, printmaking, watercolor painting, etching, and more—some of these stations also rotate to match visiting exhibits. Join an informal docent-guided tour on select days to get better acquainted with the museum. Plus, the city’s hop-on hop-off trolley stops here.

  • Architectural tours of the historic building are also available.

  • There is an admission fee to the museum.

  • Self-serve coat check is available.

  • Walking from one side of the museum to the other spans about 80 yards (73 meters).

  • Wheelchairs are available free of charge, as well as adjustable canes and a rolling walker.

The Frist Art Museum is located on Broadway in downtown Nashville. Rideshare services and taxis are readily available. The Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority (known as WeGo Public Transit) operates several bus routes that stop near the Frist. Museum parking is accessible from Demonbreun Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues.

The Frist Art Museum is open daily Thursday through Monday, and stays open late on Thursdays. Live music events, workshops, and family-focused activities are hosted year-round; check the museum’s events calendar for the most up-to-date info. Architecture tours are offered every Saturday and are free to attend. The museum offers free admission on certain days throughout the year.

On the first Saturday of every month, galleries throughout downtown Nashville open their doors for special events and exhibit openings, with most places offering free wine and refreshments. You can also spot street murals by local and international artists throughout Nashville, including a colorful portrait of Dolly Parton in the East Nashville neighborhood and the What Lifts You wings mural in the Gulch area.
