Begun in 1461 under the direction of Florentine architect Michelozzo, Fort Bokar (Tvrđava Bokar) was built to defend Pile Gate from assaults by land or sea. Along with the Old Town’s other forts, the cylindrical structure has become an iconic symbol of Dubrovnik, which keen-eyed travelers may recognize from HBO’sGame of Thrones.
Fort Bokar offers impressive panoramas of the city and the sea beyond; however, for the best views of the structure itself, continue on to the Fort Lovrijenac battlement. With a City Walls admission ticket, you can access both Fort Bokar and Fort Lovrijenac, plus St. John’s Fortress and the Minčeta Tower. A short distance south of Pile Gate, Fort Bokar is easy to find on a walk around the city walls. Parking is limited in central Dubrovnik, so it’s most convenient to reach the Old Town by public transit or private transfer.
Fort Bokar is open most days and closes in the evening. For the best view of the fort’s uncovered battlement, go on a clear, bright day.
