Forest Park

Forest Park is bounded by Lindell, Skinker and Kingshighway blvds. and Oakland Ave., covering 1,293 acres in the Central West End neighborhood, just west of downtown. Opened to the public on June 24, 1876, Forest Park is one of the country's largest urban parks. Distinguished by statues, monuments and works of art, it is home to major museums and a popular place for picnicking, jogging and bicycling. Venetian fountains propel water up to 30 feet high at the Grand Basin, an area lined with lovely terraces. Picnickers stake out spots on the grass, while paddleboaters explore several canals and lakes. Rentals are available at the nearby Boathouse, where there is a restaurant with a large patio and a beer garden that offers entertainment on weekend evenings. Kids have fun at the Variety Wonderland Playground, which also provides play equipment for the disabled and visually impaired. A scenic 6-mile loop trail encircles the park, providing recreational opportunities as well as access to most major attractions. One trailhead is located at the Dennis & Judith Jones Visitor and Education Center, where visitors can obtain area information. Other facilities include the Steinburg Memorial Skating Rink, with facilities for ice-skating and sand volleyball, and the 27-hole Norman K. Probstein Golf Course. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
