POINT OF INTEREST

Fallot Mustard Mill (La Moutarderie Fallot)

31 Rue du Faubourg Bretonnière, Beaune, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

La Moutarderie Fallo is Burgundy’s last independent and family-run mustard mill. The artisan producer in Beaune has created the condiment since the mid-1800s, and today it continues its production at the mill. Tours give you a glimpse into how mustard is made and feature interactive activities for family fun.

To visit the museum, you need to book a guided tour. Two options exist: Découvertes, which features commentary and videos in the museum, plus the chance to make your own mustard; and the Sensations Forte experience, which visits the production site and ends with a tasting at the mustard bar. Both visits last around an hour. Some private tours of Beaune pass by the Fallot Mustard Mill. There are also two boutique shops in Beaune and Dijon that sell produce from the Fallot Mustard Mill.

  • You can book your visit for a specific time slot, which makes it easy to plan your visit ahead of time.

  • There’s a gift shop at the mill, where you can buy—you guessed it—mustard.

  • Tours are offered in both French and English.

  • A visit to the attraction works well for families, with a mix of educational info and hands-on experiences like making and tasting mustard.

The Fallot Mustard Mill is on rue du Faubourg Bretonnière in Beaune. By car from Dijon, the attraction can be reached in around 45 minutes via the A31 highway. By public transit, it takes around an hour, with a 30-40-minute train ride from Dijon to Beaune, and then a 20-minute walk from the station.

The site is open year-round excluding public holidays, from Monday through Saturday, morning till early evening. During the busier peak months between April and November, the site is also open on Sundays. Visits are best booked in advance directly with the mill.

If you’re interested in artisan food produced in Beaune, Dijon, or the surrounding area, there are plenty of things to look for in the shops. Keep an eye out for pain d’epices cookies sold by Mulot & Petitjean in Dijon; Epoisses cheese from the village of the same name; or Les Anis de Flavigny (anise-flavored candy), which are sold in collectible tins that make a great gift.
