POINT OF INTEREST

Etosha National Park

NAM

Leggy giraffes and lumbering elephants roam the stark white salt pans that cover Etosha National Park in Namibia. In one of Africa’s oldest and largest game parks, you’ll find broad savannah plains, shrubbery dusted a ghostly white from the desert dust, and plenty of animals that are easy to spot against the minimal landscape.

Located in northwest Namibia, Etosha is a great option for those seeking a quieter experience and something a little different from the greener parks further south. Within the park, you’ll find a range of accommodation options—from budget campsites to luxurious, all-inclusive lodges. The three main camps of Okaukuejo, Halali, and Namutoni are situated around watering holes for excellent game-viewing, while the more luxurious Dolomite and Onkoshi camps offer a more private environment.

  • Temperatures can reach 104°F (40°C) in the daytime, but plunge at night. Pack lots of layers.

  • Bring plenty of water and food, as the park is fairly remote.

  • Bring a pair of binoculars for bird-watching or spotting faraway game.

  • Don't forget your swimsuit as many of the camps have swimming pools.

From the city of Windhoek, Etosha National Park is a 4-hour drive along the B1 highway. If you’d rather not make the drive yourself, you’ll find plenty of game drives departing from Windhoek, typically for multi-day safaris of the region. Some tours will also include a visit to the Namib-Naukluft National Park.

The best time to visit depends on what wildlife you’re hoping to see. Birders who want to see thousands of pink flamingos should visit in January or February when the salt pan fills with water. Bird of prey enthusiasts should wait for the dry season from May to October when temperatures dip. The dry season is also a good time for spotting game, as the animals congregate around limited water.

Many of the camps within the park offer you the chance to book guided nighttime game tours. When the sun sets, the park changes—different animals come out to hunt and the wide sky fills with brilliant stars. It feels like a different place and it’s a great way to make the most of your time in Etosha.
