Estonian Open Air Museum
Vabaõhumuuseumi Tee 12, Tallinn, Estonia, 13521
Inspired by Scandinavian open-air museums and founded in 1957, the Estonian Open Air Museum (Eesti vabaõhumuuseum) is a collection of rural farmhouses and other historical buildings from the 18th to the 20th centuries. It is a unique glimpse into different architectural styles found across Estonia, and examines various social strata and celebrates daily life in the countryside.
The Basics
Located southwest of Tallinn’s city center on the shore of Kopli Bay, the Estonian Open Air Museum’s property hosts 14 farms, a church, an inn, a schoolhouse, a windmill, a fire station, and various shops—all of the establishments you’d find in an 18th-century village. Once inside the reconstructed villages discover the history of Estonia’s countryside towns, shop for handicrafts, eat a traditional meal at the inn, or go on a horse-drawn carriage ride.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The museum offers free parking for visitors.
- Children aged 8 and younger are admitted to the museum for free.
- Guests are invited to stroll through the wooded grounds and down to the seashore in addition to exploring the museum.
- Since the museum is entirely outside make sure to dress accordingly depending on what season you visit.
How to Get There
The Estonian Open Air Museum is roughly a 13-minute drive from Vanalinn (Old Town) following Route 8 to the southwest. You can also take bus route 21 from Vanalinn to the Rocca al Mare stop.
When to Get There
The museum is open year round, though hours depend upon seasonal changes. During the summer (Estonia’s warmest months) the museum hosts a variety of entertainment, including song and dance shows, as well as a Midsummer Eve celebration. However, the Estonian Open Air Museum does offer a variety of activities and events throughout the year, including sleigh rides in winter.
Old Town Tallinn
Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tallinn Old Town is the jewel of the city housing its art, culture, food, and history amongst its 13th-century cobblestone streets and Gothic-spired buildings.
