POINT OF INTEREST

Eravikulam National Park

Kannan Devan Hills, Kerala, India

Part of South India's UNESCO-listed Western Ghats region, this compact national park protects the endangered Nilgiri tahr species of mountain goat, along with all sorts of other mammals and birds. The park is also known for its purple neelakurinji flowers, which only bloom once every 12 years.

The park is a wonderful place for trekking, birdwatching, and wildlife spotting, and many people who come to the park do a bit of hiking while seeking out endemic species. There's also an interpretation center where you can learn about the park's history and its role in conservation, and a waterfall with its own small café. Tours of the park typically include transportation from Munnar, and some combine a visit to the park with a trip to the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, a 90-minute drive away.

  • Eravikulam National Park is a must-see for fans of wildlife and hiking.

  • Be sure to wear good bug spray (preferably containing Deet) and sun protection.

  • Always stay on trails and follow your guide’s instructions in order to help preserve the park’s ecosystem.

Eravikulam National Park is about a 15-minute drive north of Munnar, in a hilly inland area in the South Indian state of Kerala. The easiest way to get there is by taking a taxi or joining a tour that includes round-trip transportation from your hotel.

Most years, the best time to visit the park is between October and January, when the weather is pleasantly cool and there's not typically too much rainfall. Be aware the park is closed in February and March, during Nilgiri tahr calving season. Also note that the last time the neelakurinji flowers bloomed was 2018; sometimes a bloom takes place outside the 12-year cycle (which is generally from late summer to early fall), so check online for information.

If you love the great outdoors, you'll find lots to see and do in Kerala. Some of the most popular outdoor activities include strolling through the tea estates of Munnar and taking a houseboat ride through the backwaters near Alleppey. Kerala is also home to some of the best beaches in India, particularly in and around the town of Varkala.
