El Tuito

Founded in the 16th century, El Tuito is a compact town easy to experience on foot; in fact, most of the attractions are within a 2-block radius of the central plaza. While many choose to explore El Tuito—including the Church of St. Peter and the distinct orange-and-yellow houses—at their own pace, those who want to make the most of their time in the region can opt for a full-day tour to El Tuito and the surrounds. These excursions typically leave from Jalisco and often feature stops at the Botanical Gardens among other places.

Situated 32 miles (52 kilometers) south of Puerto Vallarta in the Cabo Corrientes municipality, most visitors find it easiest to reach El Tuito by private vehicle. Follow Highway 200 and look for El Tuito signposts. However, there are also buses marked "El Tuito" which depart from downtown Puerto Vallarta roughly every 30 minutes.

While El Tuito is a pleasant town to visit year-round, the best times to stop by are during traditional festive periods. Make a note to arrive for the Mexican Independence Day celebrations (September 15 and 16) as well as the mid-January festivities in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Alongside El Tuito, there are plenty more small towns in Jalisco worth visiting. San Sebastián del Oeste, one of Mexico’s 121 so-called "magic towns" (pueblos mágicos) is one of them. There, you can learn about the mining history of the region and appreciate panoramic views from the Cerro de la Bufa.
