Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art

500 W Washington St., Indianapolis, Indiana

Located in downtown Indianapolis, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art showcases the stories of the Indigenous Peoples of North America and of the American West. Inspired by the landscape and architecture of the southwest, the museum is set within a large, round base as a nod to the circular symbols and spaces of Native Pueblo communities. Inside, you’ll find permanent collections alongside temporary exhibitions.

The Eiteljorg Museum aims to offer visitors insight into the culture of the American West through its collection of artifacts and art housed in the Native American Galleries, along with contemporary works by artists including Georgia O’Keeffe and Frederic Remington. Free guided tours are available with paid admission, but reservations must be made three weeks in advance. Stop by the on-site café for salads and sandwiches, and visit the family area if you’re traveling with kids, which has hands-on activities, a sensory room, and more.

  • Manual wheelchairs and canes are available free of charge at the main admissions desk.

  • There is a designated bag check-in area where you can store items—backpacks, umbrellas, coolers, and large bags are not allowed in the museum galleries and must be checked in.

  • Guided tours are available upon request; make your reservation via the website three weeks in advance.

Located within White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis, the Eiteljorg Museum is within walking distance of several hotels and major attractions. The Route 8 IndyGo bus stops at White River State Park, which is near the museum; check the website for times and route. Rideshare services and taxis are also readily available.

The Eiteljorg Museum is open daily, except for on major holidays. On weekends, the museum typically hosts public guided gallery tours at 2pm, but check ahead of your visit to confirm. The Eiteljorg Indian Market & Festival takes place in June and features jewelry, pottery, paintings, beadwork, and more from makers across the US and Canada, as well as live performances.

Next to the Eiteljorg Museum you’ll find the Indiana State Museum, which houses exhibits on the history, science, art, and culture of Indiana, from prehistoric times to the present day. Even the museum’s facade, sidewalks, and stair railings tell a story: Entitled 92 County Walk, the sculptures on the walls and grounds of the museum represent each of the state's 92 counties.
