POINT OF INTEREST

Ebenezer Baptist Church

101 Jackson St. NE, Old Fourth Ward, Atlanta, Georgia

Located in Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn neighborhood, Ebenezer Baptist Church is where Martin Luther King, Jr., the most prominent figure of the American civil rights movement, was baptized, grew up, and served as pastor until his death. Part of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park, the church is a memorial to King and has been restored to look as it did when King and his father were ministers.

Ebenezer Baptist Church is a common stop on city tours focusing on Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights, history, and African American culture—these can include walking, driving, and Segway tours. Visitors can explore the memorial site, browse historical exhibits, and listen to King's sermons and speeches. On Sundays they can also attend sermons at the new Ebenezer Baptist Church across the street.

  • Ebenezer Baptist Church is a must-visit for travelers interested in American history and the civil rights movement.
  • There are two sites: the historic church and memorial (the Heritage Sanctuary) and the new church (the Horizon Sanctuary).
  • The Horizon Sanctuary is open for Sunday services but not tours.
  • Ebenezer Baptist Church is wheelchair-accessible.

Ebenezer Baptist Church is in the Sweet Auburn Historic District. The Heritage Sanctuary is located on Auburn Avenue, while the Horizon Sanctuary is across the street on Jackson Street. Both sites are easily accessible by bus or the MARTA rail line—King Memorial is the nearest station.

The Heritage Sanctuary is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4pm. Visitors who wish to attend Sunday services can do so at the new Ebenezer Baptist Church Horizon Sanctuary across the street. Those may want to leave extra time to visit other sites in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site nearby.

Established in 1980, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site comprises several buildings around the King home on Auburn Avenue in the Sweet Auburn Historic District. In addition to seeing the Ebenezer Baptist Church, visitors can visit King’s birth home and grave, learn about his legacy at the King Center, and check out historical exhibits at the visitor center.
