POINT OF INTEREST

East Rock Park

41 Cold Spring St., New Haven, Connecticut

The largest park in New Haven, East Rock Park is also an unmissable local landmark. Named for its dramatic ridge, which soars 350 feet (107 meters) high, this hilly park can be seen from far and wide, and also offers impressive views over New Haven and the Long Island Sound. With multiple hiking trails, it’s a great place to get active.

It’s not hard to see why East Rock Park is such a popular destination in New Haven. Long frequented by Yale University students, the site offers lush nature, challenging trails, and dramatic views, making it an impressive place to explore. There are a number of ways to make the most of the outdoor setting, from the park’s basketball court and bike paths to its picnic pavilions.

While it’s possible to drive to the top of East Rock Park—or frequent the lower-level trails—it’s worth having the full experience of hiking up, whether you take the gentler paved route or the tougher Giant Steps trail. Once there, you can admire the historic Soldier & Sailors Monument, along with the vista.

  • Non-paved trails are strictly for pedestrians, and mountain bikes are not permitted.

  • Rock climbing is prohibited, and visitors should leave the park as they found it.

  • Due to the uneven ground and steep trails, it’s best to come prepared with sturdy shoes with good grip, as well as water and comfortable layers.

  • A ranger station is located at College Woods, and rangers are on-site from morning to late afternoon on weekdays.

East Rock Park is north of downtown New Haven, and can be reached on the 229 bus to the park, or the Blue Line of the Yale Shuttle, which stops nearby. Rideshare services and taxis also make getting there easy.

The park is open daily, from sunrise to sunset. The lower drives of the park are open year-round, though the vehicle route to the park’s summit closes on weekdays during the winter low season. Aim to visit on a good-weather day for comfortable hiking, and to make the most of the views.

One of the highlights of East Rock Park is the Pardee Rose Gardens. Founded over a century ago, it’s known as one of the finest rose collections in Connecticut. Visit between April and October to see the flowers in bloom.
