POINT OF INTEREST

Durban Botanic Gardens

9A John Zikhali Road, Berea, Durban, ZAF

Established in 1849, Africa’s oldest botanic gardens spread across 37 acres. With winding paths, manicured lawns, and a diverse array of flora, the spot is a green oasis just outside the city. You’ll find treasures, including the Orchid House–home to more than 8,000 plants–and the Butterfly Garden, which highlights species native to KwaZulu-Natal.

The gardens offer free entry and are open daily, making them the perfect spot to recharge after spending time in the bustling city of Durban. Many city tours will include a stop at the gardens to introduce you to regional plant life, while the shady lawns and benches encourage picnicking. While you explore, stop by the lake to discover a birdwatcher’s paradise or stage a casual photoshoot in the historic sunken garden.

  • Check the weather–you’ll want to relax as you stroll, so pick a sunny day.

  • Pack a picnic, as the garden on the grounds has limited hours.

  • If you have your own vehicle, onsite parking is available.

  • If you’re interested in a guided tour provided by the gardens, book ahead to reserve a time.

The gardens are a 5-minute drive from downtown Durban with the main entrance along John Zikhali Rd. Taxis are easy to find in the city but ensure you agree on a price before departing. Otherwise, Uber is reliable and affordable within South Africa.

The gardens close by early evening, so opt for an afternoon visit so you can take your time exploring. The gardens’ big trees provide shade, and plenty of benches and picnic tables are available so you can take a break if it gets too warm. Check out the gift shop, but be aware that it closes in the afternoon before the gardens.

Accompanied by a professional guide, 30-minute to 1-hour tours of the gardens via golf cart are offered. Learn about the long history of the gardens and the diversity of the flora and fauna that can be found as you relax in nature. Part of the proceeds from the tours returns to the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust to keep the gardens beautiful for generations to come.
