POINT OF INTEREST

Driftwood Beach

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Once a maritime forest, Driftwood Beach is now a graveyard of sorts for preserved ancient driftwood and downed trees. Years upon years of erosion have created this serene, almost unworldly-looking landscape, with its calm waters and petrified roots only adding to the hauntingly beautiful scene. Stroll the shoreline and admire the nearly 500-year-old trees that cover this 1.3 mile (2 km) stretch of sand.

It’s not advisable to swim at Driftwood Beach: Although, technically, you could go into the water, it’s not recommended as driftwood and roots are beneath the water and currents are unpredictable. Since you cannot see deep beyond the surface, and with no lifeguard present, this beach is best explored on foot or while enjoying a picnic. The Jekyll Island Fishing Pier and Clam Creek Picnic Area are accessible via a walking trail that connects to Driftwood Beach.

  • There is no charge for parking, but there is for entering the island.

  • Parking rates may increase on certain days, like 4th of July.

  • The beach is pet friendly, but you must keep your dog leashed at all times.

Driftwood Beach is located on Jekyll Island in southeastern Georgia, east of Interstate 95 via the Jekyll Island Causeway. From the Jekyll Island Airport, Driftwood Beach is 3 miles away; rental cars are available at the airport, as are taxi services. Dedicated on-site parking for Jekyll Beach is available.

Thankfully, the driftwood and trees lining Driftwood Beach aren’t going anywhere, so you can visit year-round. Summer is peak tourist season, but early autumn and late spring are less crowded, yet the climate is typically still comfortable.

In the winter, the sands of Driftwood Beach aren’t nearly as crowded as in the summer. Head during the festive season and when night falls, Jekyll Island looks amazing under the vibrant holiday lights that adorn the cottages. Add a cup of hot cocoa to keep you warm throughout the day.
