Don Carlos S.XV Historic Winery (Bodega Histórica Don Carlos S.XV)

Calle Isilla, 1, Aranda de Duero, Burgos

Located in Aranda de Duero on the Ribera del Duero wine route, Bodega Histórica Don Carlos is a historic 15th-century winery. Four miles (seven kilometers) of cellars, originally used for storing wine, run beneath Aranda. In a medieval cellar, this bodega offers tours, tastings, food pairings, and a wine store.

Stop by Bodega Histórica Don Carlos S.XV to sample the wines of the Ribera del Duero region—or simply soak up the vibe of the ancient space. Come on a weekday for theatrical guided tours and tastings. On weekends, take part in tastings and food pairings with choices including cheese, tapas, cold cuts, chocolate, and roast lamb. Book in advance to secure your place—or join a Ribera del Duero wine tour that visits the bodega and nearby estates.

  • With a wide selection of local wines, especially crianzas, the Don Carlos bodega is a great choice for wine lovers.

  • The lively guided Bodega Histórica Don Carlos S.XV tours are family friendly.

  • The Aranda cellars stay cool throughout the year. If you’re visiting in summer, bring a jacket.

  • A steep, curved set of stairs leads down to the cellars. There is no wheelchair-friendly alternative.

Bodega Historica Don Carlos sits in the historic center of Aranda de Duero, about .6 miles (1 kilometer) from the bus station for a 10-minute walk. It’s about an hour by bus from Burgos and around two hours by bus from Madrid’s Avenida de America station. Travelers who plan to visit estates will need their own wheels—or take a tour with transportation.

Bodega Histórica Don Carlos S.XV runs on very Spanish hours, opening from midmorning until lunch, closing for a leisurely siesta, and then opening from the late afternoon until midevening. On Sunday, it opens for the morning session only. Saturday offers the broadest range of tour choices, but it is also the winery’s busiest day.

Known for its medieval wine cellars, the riverside town of Aranda de Duero is the epicenter of the Ribera del Duero wine region. Many travelers visit exclusively for wine. Besides a range of bodegas selling local wine such as Rioja crianza, it’s home to the Interpretation Center of Wine Architecture, or CIAVIN. There’s also a small railroad museum, a number of historic churches, some restaurants, and several country walks.
