POINT OF INTEREST

Domaine Debray

1 Place Saint-Jacques, Beaune, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

In the land of historic Burgundy wineries, Domaine Debray is the new kid on the block. This young wine estate was established in 2006, yet has made a name for itself as a quality producer of whites and reds. The winery prides itself on its traditional wine-production methods, such as grape collection by hand and vinification in French oak barrels.

Domaine Debray is a working winery with vineyards spread over 10 acres (4 hectares). You can see the grapes being separated and crushed in production areas, plus the bottling and labeling machines. 1-hour tasting sessions typically visit the vat room and cellars, and let you taste six wine varietals. As the winery is small and relatively new, it doesn’t feature on many wine tours from Beaune or Dijon. However, you can request it as a stop on private, custom tours.

  • This is a great winery if you don’t have transport, as it’s located in a town that’s easy to access via public transport.

  • Domaine Debray is a smaller winery that’s not particularly aimed at families. Children may be bored.

  • Although walk-in tastings can be arranged, it’s better to book in advance—especially if you need an English-speaking wine guide.

  • Wheelchair users can be accommodated, as long as a reservation is made in advance.

Domaine Debray is in the heart of Beaune on Place Saint-Jacques, a short walk away from the famous Hospices de Beaune. From the nearby city of Dijon in Burgundy, it’s a 45-minute drive via roads A31 and D974, or a 40-minute train ride to Beaune Station. Trains depart frequently; from the train station, it’s a 15-minute walk to the winery.

The winery is open year-round, every day, between mid-morning and early evening. It closes for lunch between 12pm and 2pm. Tastings take place most days, with a selection of times available in the morning or in the afternoon, but you’ll need to book in advance to secure your spot.

If you have more time to spend in Beaune, plan a trip to the nearby Hospices de Beaune before or after your visit to Domaine Debray. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is less than a 5-minute walk from the winery and boasts curious architecture, an art museum, and vineyards growing pinot noir and chardonnay grapes.
