Named in honor of philanthropist and collector Dolores Olmedo, this museum in Mexico City’s Xochimilco suburb houses a collection of more than 130 original works by Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera. Paintings by Frida Kahlo and Rivera’s first wife, Angelina Beloff, also line the halls of the 16th-century building.
The museum’s collections and exhibitions showcase artwork and artifacts from around Mexico. It also offers workshops and cultural programs for the whole family, and its temporary exhibits are constantly changing, so there’s always something new to see. Private rooms, which include furnishings and personal memorabilia from Dolores Olmedo’s home, were recently opened to the public, and you can explore the estate’s manicured grounds to see resident peacocks, hairless Xoloitzcuintli dogs, and native plant species unique to the Xochimilco area.

There are several ways to reach Museo Dolores Olmedo. Most visitors arrive as part of a Mexico City sightseeing tour or by public transport—take metro Line 2 to Tasqueña station, then ride the light rail to La Noria station, just a short walk away.
The museum is open 10am to 6pm Tuesday through Sunday, and there isn’t really a bad time to visit. Admission is free on Tuesdays.
