Dijon Cathedral (Cathedral of Saint Benignus of Dijon)

Place Saint Bénigne, Dijon, Boulgogne-Franche-Comté

Among Dijon’s most prominent religious landmarks, the Dijon Cathedral is recognizable for its turret-capped towers and its Gothic facade. Though a church has stood on the site since the 6th century, the version that stands today was constructed beginning in 1281. Today, the building is a symbol of the city and part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Center of Dijon.

Said to be built on the grave of St. Benignus—Burgundy’s first martyr, who was executed by the Romans for heresy in the 3rd century—the Dijon Cathedral is one of the city’s key historical highlights. Originally built in a Romanesque style, it was later rebuilt according to Gothic traditions following a devastating fire and a later collapse, and is known for its relatively spare and austere design, though its distinctive turrets and colorful roof tiles give it a personality all its own.

The cathedral can be seen during Dijon walking and sightseeing tours, and is also easy to visit independently, as it’s right in the center of town.

  • Inside the cathedral, discover the landmark’s Roman-era artifacts and relics, and learn more about its history.
  • An architectural highlight is the 10th-century crypt, where St. Benignus’ relics are held.
  • The cathedral itself is free to enter, though there is an additional charge if you wish to explore the crypt.
  • You can pick up souvenirs at the cathedral gift shop.

The Dijon Cathedral is in the heart of the city, less than a 10-minute walk from the Gare de Dijon, the main train station. It can also be reached by the T1 and T2 trams, which stop nearby at Darcy, as well as by bike or taxi.

The Dijon Cathedral is open every day, and Mass is held several times per day, throughout the week. If visiting when a service is in session, remember to be quiet and respectful.

The Dijon Cathedral hosts a regular schedule of organ performances on Friday afternoons that are free to attend. In addition, carillon concerts are held at the beginning of August each year, and the cathedral has several choirs who perform regularly.
