Devil’s Dyke

Devil's Dyke Rd, Brighton, England

Once hailed by artist John Constable as “the grandest view in the world”, Devil’s Dyke offers more than just stunning panoramas. As England’s longest, deepest, and widest dry valley, its history is as intriguing as its vistas: Scientists attribute its creation to the last ice age, and its nearby sights include the remnants of an Iron Age hill fort and an abandoned Victorian funfair.

Many travelers come to Devil’s Dyke during tours from Brighton that explore the beauty of the South Downs landscape—day trips typically include minibus transportation and regular stops at scenic nature spots, such Middle Farm and Seven Sisters. Some guided tours start in London with train travel, as well as minivan transportation, with stops at Beachy Head, Devil’s Dyke and the Seven Sisters Country Park.

  • There’s a pub nearby called The Devils Dyke, which offers gastropub bites.

  • For parking, you can park right outside the pub, and there’s also a designated Blue Badge space.

  • Visitors with a dog must keep them on a lead near local livestock, such as the grazing cattle.

  • It’s best to have hiking boots as the ground can be uneven and muddy if it’s rained.

The 77 bus offers open-top services to Devil's Dyke during summer and weekends, departing from Brighton's city center, passing by the pier and train station. The service typically operates daily in summer, weekends, and Bank Holidays in spring and autumn, and Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank Holidays in winter, except Christmas Day. Additionally, bus 17 runs regularly between Brighton and Poynings, followed by a scenic 25-minute uphill walk to Devil's Dyke.

The park at Devil's Dyke welcomes visitors year-round from dawn until dusk, offering ample time to explore its natural beauty and stunning vistas. Optimal times for a visit include early mornings or late weekday afternoons, allowing for quieter and more peaceful experiences. Always travel in a group if visiting when it’s getting dark.

The scenic South Downs Way is a renowned 100-mile (160-kilometer) National Trail passing through Devil's Dyke, which offers panoramic views of the countryside. Several footpaths connect Devil's Dyke with other nearby areas, including Brighton, just 5 miles (8 kilometers) away, and the charming villages of Fulking and Poynings, both a pleasant 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) hike.
