POINT OF INTEREST

Denali National Park

Park Rd., Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska

While there is more than one visitor center in Denali National Park, when folks say the “Denali Visitor Center,” they mean the one at mile marker 1.5 on Denali Park Road. Open only in summer, this is the park’s main information hub, where you can get a passport stamp, pay the park entrance fee, and chat with rangers.

Most park-goers consider Denali Visitor Center a pilgrimage stop, especially since most of the park is backcountry and inaccessible to private vehicles. Here, you get the rundown on Denali’s majesty and history via exhibits, displays, ranger talk, and programs, and the 20-minute park film, “Heartbeats of Denali.” This is also where many high-season tour operators base their starting point, whether you’re embarking on a simple sightseeing journey or a wild sojourn into the woods. In short, all roads—at least in summer—lead to the Denali Visitor Center.

  • You can obtain your national park's passport stamp at this visitor center or the Talkeetna ranger's station.

  • The visitor center doesn’t have snacks, a souvenir shop, or restrooms—those can be found next door.

  • The bus stop and Alaska Railroad drop you off adjacent to the visitor center.

At mile 1.5 within Denali, you can drive to the visitor center and park for free (though you have to pay for park admission). If you don’t have your own vehicle, the Denali buses and the Alaska Railroad stop here; some hotels also run shuttles to the visitor center.

The Denali Visitor Center is open from mid-May to mid-September. It can get quite busy when the buses roll in, usually late morning and early afternoon, though the crowds typically disperse quickly. Hours tend to mirror business hours but check the park website before you visit.

If you’re visiting Denali beyond summer, the Denali Visitor Center will be closed. From October to April, the Murie Science and Learning Center (MSLC) acts as the park's Winter Visitor Center, and it’s just .2 miles (.3 kilometers) from the Denali Visitor Center. It’s got great hands-on exhibits and helpful rangers, too.
