Delphi Archaeological Museum

Delphi, Greece, 33054

Set next to the glorious ancient ruins of Delphi, the modern Delphi Archaeological Museum is a treasure trove of archaeological wonders. Admire thousands of gifts and monuments donated to the temple and its powerful oracle beginning in the 8th century BC, including towering statues, intricate friezes, and the spectacular Bronze Charioteer—one of the few ancient bronzes that survives intact today.

The basics

The Delphi Archaeological Museum is the perfect complement to the ancient site, and most Delphi tours include a guided visit or free time to explore both. You can delve into the museum’s collection during a private or small-group day trip from Athens. Some day trips also include a stop at the UNESCO-listed monasteries of Meteora, the ancient battlefield of Thermopylae, or the scenic mountain town of Arachova. Alternatively, join a multi-day tour covering ancient Greece's highlights including Epidaurus, Mycenae, Olympia, and Delphi.

Things to know before you go

  • Admission tickets to the Delphi ruins are also valid for entrance to the Delphi Archaeological Museum on the same day.

  • The museum is relatively large with a number of rooms to cover, so plan on spending at least an hour inside to take in the highlights.

  • The museum is indoors and has air conditioning, while the ruins are outdoors with very little shade. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat and sunscreen if visiting both.

  • The museum is fully accessible for wheelchair users and also offers accessible restrooms.

How to get there

The Delphi Archaeological Museum is adjacent to the Delphi archaeological site at the foot of Mt. Parnassus, about 100 miles (180 kilometers) northwest of Athens. Though a public bus line connects the capital city to Delphi, the best way to visit is by rental car or a day trip that includes round-trip transportation.

When to get there

The best time to visit the archaeological ruins and adjacent museum is first thing in the morning before the bus tours arrive and while the temperatures are still mild. The museum generally closes in the mid-afternoon, so visit the collections first before moving on to the ruins for arrivals later in the day.

Don’t miss the Delphi Archaeological Museum highlights

The vast number of ancient artworks and artifacts in the Delphi Archaeological Museum can be overwhelming, so focus on the most important treasures if you are pressed for time. Pause to admire the towering Twins of Argos statues in room 3 and the Sphinx of the Naxians in room 5 before moving on to the detailed Column of Dancers in room 11. Plus, leave enough time to marvel at the Bronze Charioteer in room 13.
