Deadvlei

Namib-Naukluft Park, Sossusvlei, NAM

On the white clay pan of Deadvlei, petrified trees stand out like Matisse cutouts against the orange dunes. Located in the Namib-Naukluft Park, the site was formed through persistent drought and scorching sun, which killed the trees and dried them until they became stark black skeletons. Eerie and dramatic, Deadvlei shows off the strange beauty of the desert.

Deadvlei is often explored by guests visiting the Namib-Naukluft Park—the largest game park in Africa. It’s a favorite destination for multi-day safaris, which typically visit the towering dunes in the Sossusvlei region or seek out the desert-adapted fauna that flourishes in the desiccated environment. Deadvlei translates to “dead marsh,” in a combination of English and Afrikaans, and it’s a great location for photographers hoping to capture the harshness of the environment.

  • Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a good hat—you’ll be in a remote location with extreme temperatures and little shade.

  • Wear close-toed shoes—there’s nothing worse than hot sand getting trapped in your sandals!

  • If you’re planning a photoshoot, wear solid, bold colors to stand out against the orange dunes and blue sky.

Deadvlei is best accessed by the Sesriem gate (which you can reach by car from Windhoek via the C26). Follow the entrance road until you reach Sossusvlei, where you’ll find a car park and the beginning of the Deadvlei Hiking Trail. From Sesriem to Sossusvlei it’s a 1-hour drive and then a 5-minute walk from the car park to the site.

In the dry months from May to October, temperatures drop and you will find the climate more comfortable. You should still try to get to the park early in the day to beat the heat and avoid any possible lines at the park gates.

After exploring the dramatic Deadvlei site, head to the stunning Dead Valley Lodge, which offers accommodation that feels fully immersed in the desert. With a swimming pool under the wide blue sky and a restaurant that highlights traditional Namibian flavors, this is the place to relax and rejuvenate after touring the park.
