Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden

6500 S New Hope Road, Belmont, North Carolina

Located along the banks of Lake Wylie, the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden allows visitors to reconnect with nature in a beautiful garden setting. Spanning 380 acres (154 hectares), the site is home to more than a dozen gardens and attractions, including a tropical conservatory, annual and perennial displays, fountains, and woodland trails.

The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden features an array of specialized gardens. Highlights include the Four Seasons Garden, bringing together plants of different colors, textures, shapes, and sizes; the Cottage Garden, showcasing a collection of heirloom plants; the Canal Garden and Allee Garden, designed with water features; the Lost Hollow Garden for children; and the Orchid Conservatory, full of orchids and other tropical plants.

There are picnic tables on the grounds, as well as walking trails, such as the Persimmon Trail and the Meadowood Walk. The garden also hosts classes and special events throughout the year, such as gardening, landscaping, and painting classes, live music, and food-themed events.

  • The garden is a draw for families, and there are special programs specifically for kids.

  • Visitors are welcome to bring their own food and drinks, though alcohol is not permitted.

  • There’s no on-site restaurant, but light snacks can be purchased from the garden store, and there are food trucks that visit occasionally.

  • It’s a good idea to bring insect repellent when visiting during the summer.

  • The garden is wheelchair and stroller accessible.

The garden is located in Belmont, about 18 miles (29 kilometers) west of Charlotte. The best way to get there is by car—take either Interstate 77 or 85 to North Carolina Route 279. There’s plenty of free parking on-site.

The hours for Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden depend on the season, and it's closed for several holidays, so check the calendar in advance. The garden will be at its most lush in the spring and summer, though the conservatory will have flowers all year round. Special events, such as the Chinese Lantern Festival and Christmas Lights Spectacular, require a separate admission fee, and have extended hours into the night.

Lake Wylie is a man-made lake that offers 325 miles (523 kilometers) of shoreline. A popular recreational destination, the lake comprises six public boat access areas, and two beaches with swimming access. There are also two towns located on the lake: Tega Cay and Lake Wylie.
