Coronado Bridge

The San Diego-Coronado Bridge—or, as it's often called, the Coronado Bridge—stretches for 2.1 miles (3.4 kilometers) across San Diego Bay, connecting the cities of San Diego and Coronado. Since its completion in 1969, it has become a landmark of San Diego and the primary way to access the beaches of Coronado.

It would be hard to visit San Diego without at least eyeing this elegant bridge. While beautiful from afar, the bridge is best experienced up close, by driving over it and taking in the views of both downtown San Diego and Coronado. See it from a different perspective on a San Diego harbor cruise or jet boat ride, or by biking along the Silver Strand Bikeway—either on your own or on a guided tour.

  • The Coronado Bridge offers some of the best views of San Diego from its highest point.

  • There is no toll to cross the bridge.

  • Don’t forget your camera if you’re riding the bus or are a passenger (there is no stopping on the bridge).

The bridge can be accessed via Interstate 5 in Barrio Logan on the San Diego side or from the end of Fourth Avenue in Coronado. The 901 bus crosses over the Coronado Bridge.

The bridge is always open, though the views tend to be best around dawn or dusk. Avoid weekday rush hour if possible.

The Coronado Bridge was designed by Robert Mosher (a Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice) as a way to ease vehicle ferry traffic across San Diego Bay. The bridge features a notable 90-degree curve, which was necessary to make the bridge high enough for naval aircraft carriers to pass beneath it. The bridge’s arched towers were inspired by the Cabrillo Bridge in Balboa Park.
