Columbia River Maritime Museum

1792 Marine Drive, Astoria, Oregon

One of Oregon’s best-known museums, the Columbia River Maritime Museum celebrates the region’s nautical history, from the earliest days of Native American boat-building up to today. Right on the Columbia River, and housed in a modern, wave-inspired building, it’s home to a large collection of vessels and other artifacts.

Established in 1963, the museum is devoted to the maritime history, art, and culture of the Columbia River and surrounding waterways. It boasts a 22,000-object collection, including boats, models, gear, weapons, and other artifacts, as well as 35,000 photographs, and its exhibits cover topics like naval history, shipwrecks, storms, and the fishing industry.

Set near the mouth of the Columbia River northwest of Portland, and housed in its current, eye-catching building since 1982, the museum is within day-trip distance of Portland, making it a popular destination for history buffs and families.

  • The Lightship Columbia, a National Historic Landmark, is moored adjacent to the museum, and is included in general admission.

  • All galleries and exhibition spaces are wheelchair accessible, though not all vessels are.

  • Admission is free for kids age 5 and under, and discounted for ages 6–17.

  • You can pick up maritime souvenirs at the gift shop.

The Columbia River Maritime Museum is located at 1792 Maritime Drive in Astoria, Oregon, about a 2-hour drive from Portland via US-26 W or the Columbia River Hwy. The cities are also connected by the CC Bus and the POINT Intercity Bus Service, both of which depart from Portland’s Union Station.

The museum is open daily, from morning to early evening; it’s closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. To bypass the crowds, visit on weekdays and avoid the summer season and school holidays.

Just a few miles from the Pacific coast, the city of Astoria, Oregon, offers a wealth of cultural and natural attractions. In addition to the Columbia River Maritime Museum, highlights include the Astoria Column, Astoria Riverfront Trolley, and the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park.
