Coco Plum Beach

Coco Plum Dr, Marathon, Florida

On the island of Great Exuma, Coco Plum Beach boasts the powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters that the Bahamas are known for. One unique characteristic of this beach, though, is that the water is super shallow, especially during low tide, making it the perfect spot to see sand dollars and sea creatures like starfish.

Guided ATV tours as well as boat tours and fishing charters of Great Exuma often include a stop at Coco Plum Beach—a good snorkeling spot for newbies thanks to the shallow waters. Because Coco Plum is a bit rugged with little to no infrastructure, there aren’t many amenities; travelers report that there are no restrooms, so keep that in mind as you plan your day. You can also combine a visit to Coco Plum with stops at other nearby beaches and natural attractions like Clifton Heritage National Park, or swing by the town of Rolleville, which is home to seafood restaurants and shops.

  • Be sure to bring your own food and drinks to the beach.

  • Dogs are allowed on the beach, but they need to be on a leash.

  • There are no lifeguards on duty at Coco Plum.

Coco Plum Beach is about 40 minutes by car from George Town in Great Exuma. If you’re driving, head north along Queens Highway and look for signs for the Barraterre area. Expect the road to be a bit rocky and uneven. Because of this, consider visiting the beach as part of a tour that includes round-trip transportation.

Generally speaking, mid-November to May is a good time to visit Great Exuma. This is the island’s busy season, but since Coco Plum Beach is secluded, it doesn’t attract the same crowds as other beaches. You also might want to check a local tide chart to find out when low tide is happening.

Coco Plum Beach is close to Big Major Cay, famously known as Pig Island, near Great Exuma. Here, you can meet the swimming pigs of the Bahamas. The critters have become extremely popular in recent years thanks in part to social media. You can catch a boat to Big Major Cay from Great Exuma or Nassau.
