Cochem Castle

Schlossstraße 36, Cochem

One of the largest castles overlooking Germany’s Moselle River, Cochem Castle (Reichsburg Cochem) boasts more than a millennium of history. Rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style in the 19th century after a period of ruin, the castle is a popular destination for history lovers and families, particularly during its medieval and Christmas festivals.

First built more than 1,000 years ago, later ravaged by Louis XIV’s troops during the 17th century, and renovated in the 19th century by Berlin businessman Louis Ravené, Cochem Castle (also known as Reichsburg Cochem, or the Imperial Cochem Castle) blends architectural eras and styles. Poised more than 300 feet (91 meters) above the Moselle River, the landmark can be visited on guided tours, while a series of festive events throughout the year offer another way to experience it.

  • Due to its many stairs and historical architecture, Cochem Castle is unfortunately not accessible to disabled visitors.

  • One of the landmark’s draws is the Castle Tavern, open daily through the summer high season and sporadically during the low season. It serves fresh, local cuisine and offers an open-air terrace with views over the river.

  • Guided tours are the only way to visit the castle’s interior; German tours are offered regularly, and English tours less often (check schedules before your visit).

  • Well-behaved dogs are permitted at the castle and go on its tour.

From May through October (and during select festive events), Cochem Castle can be accessed by a public shuttle bus from central Cochem. The castle cannot otherwise be accessed by car or motorcycle, and visitors wishing to visit independently must make the roughly half-hour uphill journey on foot from the town.

During the high season, which typically runs from March through October, the castle (including its restaurant) is open every day, from morning until early evening (barring select dates when its festivals are held); English tours are held once per hour. Opening hours and restaurant and tour availability vary significantly at other times of the year; it’s advised to research its timings before you visit.

Beyond its regular schedule of guided tours, Cochem Castle hosts several annual events that are their own popular draws. The Knight’s Meal (a medieval feast complete with costumed entertainers) is held roughly once weekly during the high season. The Medieval Castle Festival (typically held in early August) includes medieval-themed performances and activities, while Cochem’s Advent Magic and Castle Christmas events are held in December.
