POINT OF INTEREST

Clos de Vougeot

Rue de la Montagne, Vougeot, Burgundy

A highlight of the Burgundy Wine Route, Château du Clos de Vougeot is one for history buffs. Built as a winery by monks in the 12th century, the site has since evolved into a Renaissance-style walled estate. Today, it no longer produces wine but exists as an intimate wine museum and event location, showcasing historic grape presses, exhibitions, and lavish dining events.

Château du Clos de Vougeot offers both guided tours and the tour-and-lunch La Table de Léonce package—this takes place in the castle’s Renaissance wing and showcases traditional food and wine from Burgundy. Burgundy Grand Crus route tours from Paris, Dijon, and Beaune often stop at Château du Clos de Vougeot and are a great way to discover different wineries without having to drive afterwards. If you’re more interested in the scenery, many bike tours pass the chateau, too.

  • Besides being of interest to wine lovers, the château appeals to anyone interested in French medieval, Renaissance, and wartime history.

  • For self-guided visits, an information booklet is available as you enter, along with multilingual displays throughout the site.

  • Plan for a visit of at least two hours to cover a 30-minute self-guided tour, a 20-minute film, and time to browse the shop.

  • There are on-site restrooms and a gift shop, which sells wine-related books and souvenirs, but no wine.

  • Wheelchair users can access the ground floor, but there is no elevator to access the floor where the film is shown.

The Château du Close de Vougeot is on Rue de la Montagne in the village of Vougeot, roughly halfway between Dijon and Beaune. For car drivers, it’s easy to access via the A31 highway, taking less than 30 minutes in either direction. Another option is to take the train from Dijon or Beaune to Vougeot - Gilly-Lès-Cîteaux station, followed by a 25-minute walk to reach the château.

The Château du Clos de Vougeot is open year-round, every day (except key winter holiday dates), from morning until the early evening. If you’re there in summer, look out for special events such as music and wine festivals featuring concerts, wine tastings, and even gala dinners.

Nuits-Saint-Georges is a small village near Château du Clos de Vougeot, less than 10 minutes away by car. Like the château, the village boasts a long winemaking history and is the famous producer of the Côte de Nuits varietal. If you’re driving back to Beaune or Dijon after a day trip to Château du Clos de Vougeot, Nuits-Saint-Georges makes a pleasant dinnertime detour, with traditional restaurants serving plates of authentic Burgundy food.
