Civil Rights Memorial Center, 400 Washington Ave., remembers the people who lost their lives fighting for equality during the Civil Rights Movement The center features historical information about the movement and its participants, exhibits about contemporary injustices and a 56-seat theater. Visitors who make a pledge to stand up for justice, equality and human rights can add their names to The Wall of Tolerance. The Civil Rights Memorial, designed by Maya Lin, stands adjacent to the center as a monument to those who died in the struggle for racial equality. The memorial features a round black granite table covered with a thin sheet of flowing water and inscribed with dates of key events and names of people involved in the Civil Rights Movement. It is set against a 40-foot curved waterfall flowing over inscribed words from Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
