Chimelong Safari Park

Guangzhou, Guangdong Province

China's Chimelong Safari Park—among the largest wild animal parks in the world—is home to some 20,000 animals and is presently the only zoo in the country to be awarded the 5A class tourist attraction level, the highest level attainable. More than 500 species are represented, including giant pandas, black rhinos, and Chinese white tigers.

Chimelong Safari Park is part of the larger Chimelong Holiday Resort. Visitors can choose between a single attraction ticket to the safari park or a combo ticket that includes the Paradise amusement park, Birds Park, or the International Circus. Visitors navigate a self-driving route to see the animals in naturalistic environments; there’s also a tourist train, gondola, and a pedestrian area. Book a private tour to the park to leave the driving to someone else.

*Chimelong is a must-visit for families with kids in Guangzhou. *No outside food or drinks are allowed in the park. *Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

Get to the safari park by taking metro lines 2 or 7 to Hanxi Changlong Station. Several public buses also stop nearby at Hanxi Changlong and Jinxiu Xiangjiang Beimen stations.

The safari park is open throughout the year, with extended hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Animals tend to be most active in the morning and evening hours. Avoid visiting on Chinese national holidays, when the park can get crowded with Chinese tourists.

Get ready for opportunities to see giant pandas, white tigers, rare giant salamanders, elephants, and much more: There are more than 500 rare species and more than 20,000 animals at Chimelong Safari Park. You also can visit the crocodile park and feed the giraffes under safari park supervision.

The safari park is open all day, so you can choose when to go and how long to stay. Different animals are active at different times of day, so you should be able to see some movement all day. Aim for spring or fall, when the temperatures are most moderate.

Private and group tours go to Chimelong Safari Park from Guangzhou. Private tours often include a personal vehicle and a guide to show you around the park. Some tours offer transportation to the International Circus, which can be purchased with safari park tickets.

Yes, Chimelong Safari Park was designed for families and is great for kids. Ride trams and cable cars to cover more distance than you would by walking, especially with young children who cannot walk far distances. Kids can feed giraffes, as well as learn about the animals, while they visit.

Plan on the good part of a day if you want to get your money’s worth at Chimelong Safari Park. There are several different areas to explore, all housing different animal and plant species. If you like, stay for dinner and watch the circus at the park, too.
