Situated on the northern banks of the Grijalva River, Chiapa de Corzo is one of the region’s oldest Spanish settlements with a rich indigenous history, which serves as a jumping-off point for excursions into the Sumidero Canyon. Highlights include the 16th-century church—among the best-preserved in Chiapas—and crown-shaped La Pila fountain.
Chiapa de Corzo is a popular day trip from both San Cristóbal de las Casas and Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Most travelers combine a visit to Chiapa de Corzo with an excursion into the nearby Cañón del Sumidero and tours departing from either San Cristóbal de las Casas or Tuxtla Gutiérrez typically include stops in both destinations, round-trip transportation, and walking tours of Chiapa de Corzo. Don’t miss the Moorish-style La Pila fountain, 1950s clock tower, and well-preserved Santo Domingo Church.
Look out for the La Pochota ceiba tree in the center of Chiapa de Corzo, around which it’s said the town was founded.
Take plenty of cash as ATM access may be limited in Chiapa de Corzo and many places don’t accept card payments.
Plan to spend less than half a day in Chiapa de Corzo, combining your visit with a boat ride down the Sumidero Canyon to maximize your time in the region.

Situated just 9 miles (15 kilometers) from Tuxtla Gutiérrez and 34 miles (55 kilometers) from San Cristóbal, most travelers find it easiest to reach Chiapa de Corzo by private vehicle. Alternatively, tours to the Sumidero Canyon typically stop in Chiapa de Corzo and include round-trip transportation.
Chiapa de Corzo is generally hot and humid, so the best time to visit is during the comparatively dry and cooler months between December and March. Time your visit to coincide with the January festivities which pay homage to the feast of San Sebastián and feature marching bands and traditional dances, such as the Dance of the Parachicos.
After visiting Chiapa de Corzo, fans of colonial architecture should head to Comitán de Domínguez, which is known for 16th-century buildings, a cool climate, and proximity to the Lagunas de Montebello. Alternatively, take a trip to the indigenous "magic town" of San Juan Chamula situated just 6 miles (10 kilometers) outside of San Cristóbal and pay a visit to the so-called "Coca Cola Church."
