Château de Meursault

Rue Charles Giraud, Meursault, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

With more than 1,000 years of history, the Château de Meursault is one of the Burgundy region’s oldest and most storied wine estates. It’s also among the largest: Now encompassing almost 150 acres (60 hectares) of vines spread across 35 appellations—including 18 premiers crus and three grands crus—it produces highly coveted red and white wines.

A prestigious producer that grows its grapes organically, the Château de Meursault is a must-do for any wine lover visiting Burgundy. Thanks to its sheer breadth—as well as the beauty of the estate—the château’s tasting and tour packages offer a great introduction to the richness and variety of the Burgundy region and its star grape varietals, chardonnay and pinot noir. They also provide a special opportunity to venture deep into the winery’s historic cellars, which date back as far as the 12th century and serve up atmosphere in spades.

To visit, choose from a number of the winery’s visiting packages, and book well in advance to secure your spot. Alternatively, full-day tours of Burgundy, which depart from Paris, handle all of the logistics for you.

  • Walk-ins are not permitted—either book your visiting package directly through the winery or visit as part of a guided tour.

  • Pets are not permitted anywhere at the estate.

  • Choose from a range of tasting options based on your budget and interest, from introductory offerings up to premium degustations.

  • Be sure to bring layers and comfortable footwear with you—it can be cool in the cellars all year round.

The Château de Meursault is located on Rue Charles Giraud in Burgundy’s Meursault commune. If traveling from Paris, take a direct TGV service from the Gare de Lyon to Dijon, then transfer to a local TER service to Meursault. The estate is also just 6 miles (9 kilometers) south of Beaune, one of the Burgundy region’s key jumping-off points for visiting wine lovers.

The Château de Meursault has varying opening hours throughout the year. It’s open daily during the May–September high season, from morning to early evening, and in October and April (with one-hour closing times at lunch). From mid-November to March, it closes on Sunday afternoons, Mondays, and Tuesdays. The château is also closed for several weeks during the winter holidays.

The most festive time of year in Burgundy is during Les Trois Glorieuses—the Three Glorious Days—held every year over the third weekend of November. On Saturday, Beaune hosts a street fair before a black-tie dinner at the Château du Clos de Vougeot. On Sunday, the UNESCO-listed Hospices de Beaune estate hosts a prestigious wine auction. And on Monday, the Château de Meursault holds La Paulée, a cult-favorite tasting event. For wine lovers, few events compare.
